Seven Scholarship Recipients Honored
at 2011 Annual AAUW Dinner
Of 20 applications received, these seven women were chosen. Meet our recipients:

Nancy Taylor:
Nancy will pursue a BA in Human Resources/business through WSU Distance Learning and City University. “For the last 15 years I have worked to ensure my 3 children could attend college without burden or financial obligation. When my youngest graduated in December my thoughts of going back to school began to creep back in and I realized my goal for them was also for myself.”

Alison Spencer: Alison is pursuing a master’s degree in teaching at Seattle University. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Montana in 2006. “I have always known that I want to work with children with special needs, I would love to teach in Walla Walla someday.”

Julia Ojcius:
Julie is pursing the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Ohio State University College of Medicine. She completed her undergraduate work at WWCC and Eastern Washington University. “My goal as a physician is to provide health care to people in under served areas of the world. I hope to be a dedicated, knowledgeable physician working in rural areas of eastern Washington with people of Latin America. I also greatly desire to work internationally in some capacity, and hope to facilitate in opening small clinics in developing countries.”

Lia Prins
: Lia is pursuing a BA in Visual Communication Design at the University of Washington. Lia graduated from the UW with a degree in Interdisciplinary Visual Art in 2009. “My whole life I have felt a need to make and create things, but this desire was always tempered by an equal need for things I made to bepractical.” Lia also is currently training at a private rowing center in hopes of making the national rowing team and eventually the Olympic team.

Monica Pace: Monica is pursuing a nursing degree at WWCC. She began her college education at Gonzaga University. “The only regret I ever had, in 51 years of life, was not finishing school. Well, the time is right and the stars are aligned and here I am.”

Zana Carver:
Zana is pursuing a Master of Science degree in Biology at St. Joseph College. She received a B.S. degree in Health Arts at the University of St. Francis. “Although pharmacy school would have eased our fears about the job market, teaching has always been my dream. In the future I plan to finish my Master of Science degree in Biology and eventually earn a Ph.D. in Public Health or Epidemiology.” Zana currently is teaching Anatomy and Physiology at Columbia Basin College.

Kerri Baltzor:
Kerri will study at the Aveda Institute in Seattle to become an Esthetician. “My education was put on hold in order to raise my children and help run a business. I am hopeful that within one year my education will allow me to begin a rewarding, successful career. I hope to use my education to help educate and serve others in my community by donating time, knowledge and products.”
