Our Branch

AAUW is The American Association of University Women.
It was founded in 1881 to promote education and equity for women.

The Walla Walla Branch was chartered in 1921. Membership is open to men and women who hold a two year degree or higher from an accredited college or university. We currently have over 135 members. Our branch has won the prestigious AAUW 21st Century Recognition Platinum Award for 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2005, largely due to our very active participation in our community.

AAUW has a number of fellowship programs which provide grant monies to women pursuing doctoral and postdoctoral studies. One such fellowship is named in honor of local member Dina Baker. In 2006 our branch, with help from other branches, saw that $100,000 fellowship fully funded. Women receiving grants from this fund will have our branch to thank.

AAUW is composed of two corporations:

The Association
The Association—with more than 100,000 members, 1,300 branches, and 550 college/university institution partners nationwide—advocates education and equity. Since its founding in 1881, members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day—educational, social, economic, and political. Our commitment to our mission is reflected in our public policy efforts, programs, Leadership and Training Institute, and diversity initiatives. AAUW's work extends globally through its international connections and membership in the International Federation of University Women.

The AAUW Educational Foundation
The AAUW Educational Foundation is the world's largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women. Each year the Foundation provides about $4 million in fellowships, grants, and awards for outstanding women around the globe and for community action projects. The Foundation also funds pioneering research on women, girls, and education, and international symposia.

The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund
A program of the AAUW Educational Foundation, is the nation's largest legal fund focused solely on sex discrimination in higher education. The Legal Advocacy Fund provides funds and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education
